My first year as a full-time potter was an exciting one! It got off to a cracking start with my student work recognised by Objectspace in their annual Best in Show for outstanding graduates in applied arts and design.
My preoccupation with photography and pinhole cameras was rewarded again later in the year with another pinhole ceramic camera and print accepted as a finalist in the Portage Ceramic Awards 2015.
New work, in the form of vintage cameras, resulted in ‘Paparazzi’ being accepted as a finalist at Waiclay 2015 at the Waikato Museum. Paparazzi was inspired by my collection of vintage film cameras and a previous career as a newspaper photographer.
Another previous career making wine coupled with my interest in the archaeology of pottery led to the making of amphoras and vessels that look like they have been on the ocean floor for millennia, the crustier the better!
2016 stated off with a collection of these vessels shown in Best Of The Best at Waiheke Community Gallery, a follow on from Best in Show 2015. My first exhibition with Nelson Potters Assn has also included amphoras as well as ‘Paparazzi II’. A comment on the aggressive nature of photographers who choose to make a living as a paparazzo.
With my tableware I have concentrated on simple elegant forms with classic muted coloured glazes. This is a work in progress as new shapes are developed and added to the range. For me, handmade dishes for serving, eating from and drinking from are as important as the food created.
I am very lucky to be living and working in Mapua, with an overabundance of natural beauty as inspiration, a great network of supportive potters and artists, and the most supportive wife a bloke could hope for! And a silly dog!!
